Anglers across Idaho are in for a treat this August as the Idaho Fish and Game department prepares to stock approximately 85,000 catchable-sized rainbow trout in lakes and ponds throughout the state.
This massive stocking effort aims to bolster fishing opportunities in easily accessible, family-friendly locations. From the panhandle to the southeast, anglers of all skill levels will have ample chances to reel in some fresh catches.
Notable stocking highlights include:
- 1,000 rainbow trout in Gene Day Pond in Osburn
- 3,888 rainbow trout across various sections of the Boise River
- 3,500 rainbow trout in the North Fork Boise River
- 3,000 rainbow trout in Lake Cleveland, a popular summer recreation area
- 6,250 rainbow trout in the world-famous Henrys Fork
Many of these locations offer more than just fishing. For instance, Lake Cleveland, situated at over 8,000 feet in elevation, provides numerous campsites for those looking to make a weekend out of their fishing trip.
Idaho Fish and Game encourages new anglers to try their hand at trout fishing, noting that it's an excellent way to introduce beginners to the sport. Simple setups using worm/marshmallow combinations or commercial baits like PowerBait® can be highly effective.
Annual adult fishing licenses cost around $30, while junior licenses (ages 14-17) are $16. Youth under 14 can fish for free.
While most Idaho waters are open to fishing year-round, anglers are reminded to check the 2022-2024 Idaho Fishing Seasons and Rules Booklet for specific regulations, season dates, and bag limits in their chosen fishing spots.
With this substantial stocking effort, August promises to be an exciting month for fishing enthusiasts across the Gem State.
