A young fishing enthusiast from Buffalo may have just reeled in a new state record. Gregory Martin, only 5 years old, caught a pumpkinseed fish weighing 1 pound 15 ounces while on a family fishing trip to Oneida Lake.
The impressive catch occurred late Saturday morning from a boat owned by Gregory's aunt, Hope Pragacz of Binghamton. Using a simple hook and worm setup with a drop shot sinker, the young angler managed to land the hefty sunfish.
Despite losing an ounce during transport to a certified scale, the fish still weighed in at 1 pound 14 ounces. This surpasses the current state record by five ounces, which has stood at 1 pound 9 ounces since 1994 and was tied in 2020.
Pragacz is now awaiting official certification from the Department of Environmental Conservation to confirm the new record. If verified, Gregory's catch will cement his place in New York's fishing record books, an impressive feat for such a young angler.
This potential record-breaking catch highlights the excitement and unpredictability of fishing, proving that anglers of all ages can make history with the right combination of skill and luck.
