The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is partnering with the Student Angler Organization and Women Anglers of Minnesota to host a free virtual fishing challenge for moms living in the state during Take a Mom Fishing Weekend, which coincides with Mother's Day.

The event, taking place from May 11 to May 12, allows all Minnesota moms to fish without purchasing a fishing license. To participate in the challenge, moms need to join the Facebook group "Minnesota Moms Fishing Challenge 2024" and post one photo of each fish they catch.

Participants who submit one or more fish photos will be entered into a random drawing for prizes provided by the Student Angler Organization and their partners, including gift cards for Scheels and Lund.

All fish species and sizes are welcome, and participants can either release their catch or keep it if it's in season.

The challenge follows the successful inaugural event in 2023, which saw more than 2,400 moms join. "This year, we hope even more people will join in the fun!" said Cara Hanson, DNR marketing coordinator.

In addition to the challenge, participants are invited to attend a pre-challenge virtual Fishing 101 class hosted by Women Anglers of Minnesota on May 7.

The Mother's Day weekend also marks the beginning of the fishing season, with walleye, northern pike, bass, and trout seasons opening in lakes on May 11. The Minnesota Governor's Fishing Opener event will take place from May 10 to May 12 in Lake City to celebrate the start of the fishing season.
