A fishing trip turned into a harrowing ordeal for a Florida man when a shark attacked him off the coast of Nassau County, leaving him in critical condition.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. Friday at West Rock near the port of Fernandina, north of Jacksonville. The victim, a man in his 40s whose name has not been released, was aboard his boat when the shark struck, severely injuring his right arm.
Nassau County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Alicia Tarancon reported that a quick-thinking deputy boarded the victim's boat and applied a tourniquet to stem the bleeding. The deputy then piloted the vessel back to shore, where emergency crews were waiting.
The injured fisherman was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition. Despite the severity of the attack, Tarancon stated that he is expected to recover.
This incident comes on the heels of a fatal shark attack in Hawaii last Sunday, which claimed the life of Tamayo Perry, a 49-year-old surfer and lifeguard. Perry, known for his appearances in the movie "Blue Crush" and television shows like "Hawaii Five-O," was described by his wife Emilia as "a man of deep faith ... now taken too soon."
As shark encounters continue to make headlines, marine biologists urge beachgoers and water enthusiasts to remain vigilant and follow local safety guidelines when enjoying coastal activities.
